Kerry writers shortlisted in prestigious Irish Book Awards

Two Kerry writers have been shortlisted in this year's prestigious Irish Book Awards.

Noel O'Regan from Tralee is in the running for 'Newcomer of the Year' while Barbara Byar, who also lives in Tralee, has been named among the finalists for 'Short Story of the Year'.

Meanwhile Pat Spillane's autobiography has made the shortlist for 'Sports Book of the Year'.

The An Post Irish Book Awards are a set of industry-recognition awards set up by a coalition of Irish booksellers in 2007.

Readers vote to select their favourites every year in a variety of categories, with the winners announced at a televised awards ceremony in Dublin.

Noel O'Regan, orginally from Cahermoneen, Tralee has received widespread critical acclaim for his novel 'Though the bodies fall', which is set in Kerry Head.

The novel has already been named 'Book of the Month' and is now shortlisted in the 'newcomer' category.

American Barbara Byar has been living in Tralee for 26 years, and was previously shortlisted for her work in the Saboteur Awards.

Her story 'The Peace Process' is one of six stories to make the shortlist in the 'Short Story of the Year' category.

Former Kerry footballer and TV pundit Pat Spillane has made the 'Sports Book of the Year' shortlist for his life story 'In the Blood', which was co-written with Michael Moynihan.

The winners will be announced at a gala awards night at the Convention Centre in Dublin on November 22nd.
