A secondary school teacher who failed to remain at the scene of a traffic collision on the main Tralee to Killarney road has been disqualified from driving for a year.

36-year-old Kieran Costello of 11 Castlepark, Killarney pleaded guilty to two charges arising from the incident.

Killarney District Court heard Kieran Costello was driving to work in Tralee on the morning of December 3rd 2019.

The court heard the car travelling in front of Mr Costello indicated left and went around the car in front of it, which was turning right at Dunrine, Killarney.

However, Mr Costello rear ended the car causing it to be driven into the path of an oncoming car.

One driver suffered a broken vertebrae and another suffered a cut to his forehead.

Speed was not an issue in the crash and Judge David Waters ruled the appropriate charge was one of careless driving.

Solicitor Brendan Ahern said his client, who is a secondary school teacher, was in a state of pure shock following the collision.

Mr Costello left the scene before emergency services arrived and went to work in Tralee where he taught all day and didn't mention it to anyone until the evening when he went to the garda station.

Mr Ahern said his client is extremely apologetic and this was totally out of character for him.

Judge David Waters said Mr Costello showed callousness in his actions adding it was inexcusable to choose to leave the scene twice.

He disqualified him from driving for 12 months for failing to keep his vehicle at the scene and fined him €400 for careless driving.
