A Kerry TD has proposed solutions to solve a national shortage of dentists.
Sinn Féin's Pa Daly has called for the number of training places for dentists from outside of the EU to be capped, or for the number of dental students to be increased.
He claims more than 2000 people in Kerry and Cork, mainly children, are on the HSE’s waiting list for dental and orthodontic treatment, including braces and dental surgery.
Of these, he says over 80% have been waiting more than a year.
However, Deputy Daly is against compelling dentistry graduates to work in the public sector.
