An increase in weekly payments for the Old Age Pension putting people over the threshold for medical card qualification has been described as a joke by a Kerry TD.
Fianna Fáil Party Spokesman for Older People, Deputy Michael Cahill, says that those receiving their pension should automatically be eligible for a medical card.
He has called on the Minister for Expenditure to put a system in place, where any rise in the Old Age Pension is matched by a similar rise in the qualifying income for the medical card.
Deputy Cahill has also contacted the Minister for Health on the matter, adding that this is particularly disappointing amid recent controversy in regards to charges for blister packs.
