A Kerry TD has called for Sliabh Luachra to be designated a protected area of culture and arts.
Michael Cahill made the call in the Dáil recently to initiate a Protective Designation Status for the region.
He says traditional music, dance and folklore are a vitally important part of our psyche and deserve proper recognition.
In response the Arts Minister advised the Department regularly accepts expressions of interest for additions to the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Minister Patrick O’Donovan added that practices on this can then be put forward for recognition on the UNESCO ICH list (Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity).
