A Kerry pharmacist says changes allowing them to prescribe treatments for minor illnesses, will help take the pressure off GPs.
The Common Conditions Service allows pharmacists to prescribe treatments for eight minor illnesses.
These include shingles, cystitis, cold sores and conjunctivitis.
Jack Shanahan, Haven Pharmacy Shanahan’s in Castleisland, says in some cases patients can’t always get a same-day appointment with their GP.
He says this scheme will help both patients and GPs:
94% of pharmacies across the country have now signed up to the Common Conditions Service.
Jack Shanahan says it will be March 31st before all pharmacies are offering the service.
He is urging people to have patience with their pharmacies.
