It’s likely hackers will be more interested in phone numbers and email addresses, rather than personal medical information.
That’s according to Chris Byrne, founder of Sensorpro, a software marketing platform, who has worked in computer programming for decades.
The Ventry resident says it’s likely the information taken in the hacking has already been sold on.
While he understands that people might be worried about private medical information being shared online, he says that’s not the main target for hackers.
Daragh O'Brien is the founder and Managing Director of Castlebridge.ie, a pioneer in the field of information management.
He says some large organisations pay for additional support to protect against hacking, but extra training for staff should also be considered.
Mr O’Brien says a lot of blame is being aimed at the Department of Health and the HSE, however, he says if criminals want to find a way into IT systems, they will find a way.
