Kerry hunger striker welcomes promise of formal state apology

A Kerry hunger striker has welcomed the announcement that the government is to make a formal state apology to survivors of institutional abuse.

Maurice Patton O’Connell, as well as Miriam Moriarty Owens and Mary Donovan were child inmates of Pembroke Alms Industrial School in Tralee, while Mary Dunlevy Greene was incarcerated at an industrial school in Limerick.

The four undertook a 51-day hunger strike outside Leinster House between September and November.

Today, the Taoiseach announced a package of additional supports for survivors following mediation with the group, include supports for health, education, housing, and funeral costs.

Maurice Patton O’Connell says he doesn't know when the apology will be made, but a government spokesperson says it will be as soon as possible:
