Kerry had the joint oldest average population in Ireland in 2023.
That’s according data from the CSO’s Irish population estimates from administrative data report.
The admin data indicates that the population of the state in April that year was 5.45 million.
The administrative population is the population based on admin data collected by Government departments, agencies and public bodies other than the CSO.
The figures show that Kerry had the joint oldest average population in April 2023, at 40.5 years; alongside Mayo and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown (40.4 years).
The report estimates the population in the Kingdom at the time was 165,866; 50.4% of which were female, while 49.6% were male.
The 45-49 age range accounted for the highest proportion of the population in the county, with over 12,200 (12,211) people in this category.
Tahilla in South Kerry, was one of two electoral divisions nationally which had an average age of above 50.
Kerry’s young dependency ratio was below the national average (28.1%) , at 27.4% - this is the population aged 0–14 as a percentage of the working-age population.
The old dependency ratio - was above the state average (22.5%) at 28.1% - this represents those aged 65 and over relative to the working-age population.
The report shows that Tralee local electoral area had the highest population in the county in 2023 at 23.5% (39,043), followed by Killarney (19.7% - 32,758), and Listowel (18,5% - 30,811).
The remaining LEA populations were Kenmare at 28,819, Castleisland at 18,809, and Corca Dhuibhne at 15,626.
