There are concerns over the supply of fuel into this country if the war in the Middle East continues to escalate.

Minister of State, Kerry Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae, says temporary measures will be agreed tonight by the government to help offset the rising cost of fuel.

This will include an extension to fuel allowance, targeted supports for hauliers, and a cut in excise duty; he says these will be reviewed again, probably in four weeks.

Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae says this has the potential to become very serious for the supply of fuel, let alone the price of it.

Meanwhile, Kerry Sinn Féin TD Pa Daly says the government has not done enough to address the background issues with energy, to prepare for this crisis.

He criticised the plan to increase carbon taxes on home heating oil, as he says it’s proven to widen inequality, and hit people in rural areas the hardest.
