Kerry farmers call for tractor driving age to be retained at 16

Kerry farmers are calling for the tractor driving age to be retained at 16 and for driver training to be given on a voluntary basis.

It’s as the Road Safety Authority has indicated it’s considering introducing measures around tractor driving for young people.

These include a tractor driving test, mandatory driving lessons and reviewing the age a tractor can be driven.

The issue was raised at the recent Kerry IFA meeting, with farmers agreeing to draft a proposal.

Kevin Leahy, who is a tillage farmer and contractor, says more safety and education training around the vehicles needs to be introduced.
