Kerry farmers are calling for the tractor driving age to be retained at 16 and for driver training to be given on a voluntary basis.
It’s as the Road Safety Authority has indicated it’s considering introducing measures around tractor driving for young people.
These include a tractor driving test, mandatory driving lessons and reviewing the age a tractor can be driven.
The issue was raised at the recent Kerry IFA meeting, with farmers agreeing to draft a proposal.
Kevin Leahy, who is a tillage farmer and contractor, says more safety and education training around the vehicles needs to be introduced.
