Kerry County Museum is to be closed to the public as it undergoes significant structural works.
Councillors in the Tralee Municipal District (MD) unanimously approved the €10.4 million upgrade restoration and upgrade of the Ashe Memorial Hall last July
The plan is intended to restore the building’s 1920s architecture and will also include new measures to make the building more accessible and energy efficient.
Many precious items from the current exhibitions and collections will be carefully decanted, or relocated, and a large number of items will be returned to the National Museum of Ireland.
Kerry County Council senior engineer John Ahern says work on Kerry’s arguably best-known and iconic building will get underway late this year:
€7 million funding was provided under THRIVE, the Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme (THRIVE), co-funded by the government of Ireland and the European Union, for local authorities to turn heritage buildings into useful, vibrant, and sustainable cultural and community hubs.
The other €3.4 million was provided by Kerry County council.
