A Kerry county councillor is calling for drivers who pass their driving test in an automatic car also be allowed drive manual cars.
Councillor Anne O'Sullivan has asked the council to raise the matter with the Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien.
At present, drivers who pass their test in a car with a manual transmission receive a licence to drive both manual and automatic cars, while drivers who pass their test in an car with an automatic transmission, may only drive automatic cars.
All electric cars and many hybrid cars have automatic transmissions.
The Fianna Fáil councillor said learner drivers are finding it increasingly difficult to sit their tests in manual cars, as they are becoming less common.
Cllr O'Sullivan wants the Department of Transport to address this restriction.
