A Kerry county councillor says he has no confidence in Irish Water.

Fianna Fáil councillor Mikey Sheehy made the claim at the recent meeting of Kerry County Council.

He said the lack of upgrades to wastewater facilities in Fenit is having dire impacts on the area.

Concerns about Irish Water were also raised by Cllr Michael Cahill in relation to Beaufort.

Cllr Cahill said there is a water outage in Beaufort almost every weekend now, and that it's totally unacceptable how the people there are being treated by Irish Water.

He declared that Irish Water is not fit for purpose.

Cllr Mikey Sheehy said Fenit is on the cusp of incredible development, which would mean a change of life and circumstances for people living there if changes are made.

He says the potential development in the area represents a once in a generation opportunity, but it will be missed if upgrades aren't made to the wastewater facilities.

Cllr Deirdre Ferris said development in the area will increase capacity on Fenit wastewater facilities, even though they're not currently fit for purpose.

Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, said the council is currently awaiting a decision on an upgrade for Fenit by Irish Water under the Small Towns and Villages Growth Programme.

The programme is part of Irish Water's Capital Investment Plan 2020-2024, and Cllr Sheehy pointed out that if the funding doesn't come this year, that means it will be 2025 before it might be available again.

Moira Murrell agreed that this funding is essential to the council in developing Fenit.
