A Kerry County Councillor is criticising the Government’s announcement of changes to the Local Property Tax.
Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe confirmed that the LPT will go up, but says these increases will be limited.
The Government said an estimated 96% of properties will remain in their existing LPT band, with the majority of home owners paying between between €5 and €25 more a year.
However, Independent Cllr Brendan Cronin says the Government claimed this was to protect householders.
Previously, local authorities had the option to vary the base rate of LPT by + or – 15%, but Cllr Cronin now feels local authorities will now be able to vary the base upwards by up to 25%.
He says while he doesn’t support abolishing the Local Property Tax, he feels that people in Kerry aren’t getting value from it:
