Kerry County Councillor calls on government to take legal action over EU fish quotas

A Kerry County Councillor is calling on the government to take legal action over next year's EU fish quotas, agreed on Saturday.

The EU's Council of Agriculture-and-Fisheries-Ministers approved new catch limits, known as ‘total allowable catches’ (TACs), and new fishing efforts for the most important commercial fish stocks in 2026.

Fishing effort is the size and engine power of a vessel combined with the number of days spent fishing.

Sinn Féin councillor for the Corca Dhuibne area, Robert Brosnan has condemned the scrapping of the so-called Hague Preference as part of the new agreement.

The preference has been provided for within the EU's Common Fisheries Policy since 1976 to protect the Irish fishing industry from the impact of other EU vessels accessing Irish waters.

It granted Ireland a larger share of certain stocks when the total allowable catch fell below a set level.

Cllr Brosnan says his community is not interested in the compensation in this new EU deal, but instead just want to be allowed to fish:
