A Kerry County Councillor is calling for regulations to be amended to help people who are renting get on the property ladder.
Independent councillor Liam Speedy Nolan raised the issue at the recent monthly meeting of Kerry County Council.
Cllr Liam Speedy Nolan tabled a motion calling for the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage to ensure that the regulations be amended to provide private renters with good rental records relating to payments.
He says this record should be taken into account by banks, when those renters are applying for a mortgage, and he wants it to be reflected in the level of deposit required.
Cllr Nolan says an unblemished rental record for five years, should be taken into account and be looked at a full deposit by banks.
He feels this would help younger people get on the property market which he says would also help entice younger people to stay and work locally and get involved in their communities.
The motion received support from his fellow councillors, with it being cited as a great initiative.
