Kerry County Council is to work with the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee on a project honouring a historic Kerry figure.
They want to mark the grave of the late Eugene O’Sullivan, who was instrumental in getting Fitzgerald’s Stadium built in 1936.
Mr O’Sullivan was the committee’s first chairman, played football for Kerry and Dr. Crokes, was involved with the Kerry County Board, and was a former chair of Killarney Urban District council (UDC).
A deputation from the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee called on Killarney Municipal District (MD) to part-fund the project.
The current chairman of the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee, Der Brosnan, told councillors that it took some time to find Mr O’Sullivan’s grave in Muckross Abbey.
He said they discovered that the OPW (Office of Public Works) had placed a slab of concrete over the entrance to his tomb for health and safety reasons, as it had caved in.
Mr Brosnan said it was “a sad end to a man who had given so much” to the town and county.
He told councillors that Dr Crokes GAA Club, and Kerry GAA are willing to part-fund the project.
Councillor Marie Moloney told the meeting that Mr O’Sullivan had also been an MP at Westminister in 1910.
All councillors spoke in favour of the project.
MD manager, Martin O’Donoghue said that councillors’ allocations cannot be used for projects which are not on public lands, but assured the deputation what it would look for funding streams to support the project.
