Kerry County Council is to consider providing accessible, adapted bike facilities at the Tralee-Fenit Greenway trailhead.
Council management has agreed to consult with the Kerry Sports and Recreation Partnership on providing the facility near the playground in Fenit, subject to identifying a suitable funding source.
The announcement follows a motion by councillor Deirdre Ferris at the recent Tralee Municipal District meeting.
The Sinn Féin councillor said she recently attended the ISAPA 2025 conference at MTU Tralee, where user-friendly, adapted bikes were on display.
These included side-by-side tandem bikes, as opposed to front-and-back tandems, suitable for both adults and children, including individuals who do not have the use of their legs or who use wheelchairs.
She also detailed tricycles with high-back seating and subtle strapping, designed for young children with limited mobility.
Cllr Ferris also described a secure storage system for such bikes, which could be accessed via QR code, removing the need for council staff to be present for rentals.
The facility also included storage for wheelchairs or other mobility devices while the bike is in use.
Cllr Ferris suggested implementing a similar system for beach wheelchairs, which she said would enhance accessibility without requiring staff assistance.

Speaking in support of the motion, Fianna Fáil councillor Anne O’Sullivan asked the council to consider similar facilities at the Tralee Bay Wetlands, which she said is already accessible to people with mobility issues.
