Kerry County Council has begun reviewing its tenants’ handbook.
The issue was discussed at the December housing Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) meeting, and confirmed at the recent full council meeting.
Councillor Jackie Healy Rae said he understands there are constraints around what can be done, but he said it's nevertheless important that the handbook is updated.
He argued that since some social housing rents will be increasing from February, when the rent cap is removed, the council must take responsibility for repairs which, until now, were the responsibility of tenants.
Cllr Healy Rae said that taking a proactive role in preventative maintenance is in the council’s own interest, as it ultimately probably will end up doing these works anyway at the end of the tenancy.
