Councillors in Kerry have backed a motion of no confidence in the Road Safety Authority.
It follows a motion tabled by independent councillor Jackie Healy-Rae at today’s full council meeting.
He urged members write to the Transport Minister expressing no confidence in the RSA in its current format, and urged a re-evaluation of its role.
The motion by Cllr Jackie Healy-Rae received unanimous support at the full meeting of Kerry County Council.
Figures from the Road Safety Authority show 185 people lost their lives on Irish roads in 2025, including eight road fatalities in Kerry.
Cllr Healy-Rae told the council chamber that the figures represent a failure of national road safety leadership.
The independent councillor described the RSA as becoming a communications operation, and criticised it’s “Vision Zero” approach.
He stated engineering and infrastructure save lives, but he claimed the RSA are neglecting this - as it’s “not a sexy enough issue for them”.
Cllr Healy-Rae says practical evidence based-action is needed to reduce risk on the roads, not slogans.
The motion to write to the Transport Minister expressing no confidence in the RSA received strong backing.
