A Kerry councillor has said the government is contradicting itself in its approach to solving electricity supply issues.

At the recent Tralee Municipal District meeting, Cllr Jim Finucane said reports that government will allow planning laws to be bypassed for emergency power generators in Dublin contradicts its approach to the Shannon LNG project.

The move comes amid concerns that the country's power supply will not be able for the energy demand during the winter months.

Cllr Finucane says the Shannon LNG project in North Kerry by New Fortress Energy is being treated in an ad hoc manner by comparison, and says this development is unacceptable.

The Fine Gael councillor has long supported the proposed 600mw power plant and liquified natural gas terminal on a 600-acre site between Tarbert and Ballylongford.
