Cancer patients in Kerry are to benefit from the introduction of enhanced treatment options in Cork University Hospital.
It has announced two innovations in cancer care which it says will streamline patient care across the South West.
Cork University Hospital is the first hospital outside the capital to offer Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR) for prostate cancer patients.
This is an advanced form of radiotherapy that delivers higher doses of radiation in fewer sessions.
CUH says the first patient to undergo prostate SABR there, completed the full course of treatment in five sessions.
Meanwhile, the hospital has implemented the National Cancer Information System (NCIS) – a centralised digital platform which shares treatment information between Ireland’s designated cancer centres.
Cork University Hospital says the dual developments mark a new era for cancer services in the hospital and for the South West.
