Kerry agricultural organisations welcome extension of nitrates derogation

Agricultural organisations in Kerry have welcomed the official extension of Ireland's nitrates derogation.

The Nitrates Directive is an EU law which limits the amount of fertilizer and livestock manure that can be spread on land.

The EU agreed on Tuesday to extend a derogation allowing Ireland use more than other bloc countries for the next three years.

Just under 400 (392) of Kerry's over 8,000 (8,031) farmers applied for the derogation in 2025.

CEO of Kerry Dairy Ireland, Pat Murphy, told Radio Kerry's Sari Houlihan that it took a huge effort to get the derogation approved:
