The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council has been invited to Canada to celebrate the 160th anniversary of the world’s first successful transatlantic telegraph cable.
The most easterly province in Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador, extended the official invite via the Minister for Tourism and Culture.
It's part of a joint UNESCO World Heritage nomination of the transatlantic cable between Valentia in South Kerry and Heart’s Content in Newfoundland.
The 19th century construction was ground-breaking in the history of global communications.
This year marks the 160th anniversary of the landing of the cable, and the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Heart’s Content Cable Station.
The event takes place in July, after the mayoral chain is handed to the new Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council in June.
