Ireland South MEP slams politicians who backed European Commission President in no confidence vote

An Ireland South MEP has labelled the majority of government MEPs as disgraceful for backing the European Commission President.

Kathleen Funchion was reacting after Ursula von der Leyen comfortably survived a vote of no confidence in the European Parliament, by 260 to 175, with 18 abstentions.

The Sinn Féin MEP says it’s deeply disappointing that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil MEPs chose not to support the no confidence motion.

She described it as an opportunity to hold her accountable for complicity in the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

MEP Funchion says the party voted against her election as Commission President last July and that Europe must demand leadership that defends human rights.
