Invasive Species Bureau vital for biodiversity in Kerry

The establishment of a state Invasive Species Bureau is vital for biodiversity in Kerry.

That's according to the assistant professor in environmental and sustainable horticulture at UCD, Dr Noeleen Smyth.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the National Biodiversity Data Centre (NBDC) have partnered to establish the agency.

An invasive alien species (IAS) is a non-native plants, animals, fungi or microorganism that was introduced, intentionally or unintentionally, into Ireland, where they harm the environment, economy or human health.

Dr Smyth says Kerry's mild climate allows beautiful but harmful invasive species like montbretia, which is from Africa, and fuchsia, native to South America, to flourish:
