Changes to systems in the Department of Agriculture have led to an increase in the number of forestry licences issued.

Minister of State with responsibility for land use, Pippa Hackett says the crisis in the forestry sector, including a significant backlog in licences being processed, is very much on her agenda.

The Green Party Senator says forestry is at an important juncture in our country and she is hoping to put a long-term strategy for the sector out for public consultation later this year.

Up to 14,000 people are employed in the Irish forestry sector, which is worth around €2.4 billion.
