A Kerry County Councillor has claimed ‘fish seem to be more important than people’ after learning that works will take place on a Ring of Kerry bridge during the tourist season.
Independent councillor Johnny Healy-Rae raised the issue at the recent meeting of Kenmare Municipal District.
Improvements to the Cummergorm Bridge, located on the N70, are required to go ahead during peak tourism season, outside of the fish migration months.
This was among a list of requirements submitted by Inland Fisheries Ireland to protect fish habitats
The works are set to take place between this July and September.
The council responded that a one-way traffic system will be put in place and will not pose a ‘big issue’ to the busy road.
The improvements were put to a vote and received unanimous support from Kenmare MD councillors.
