The health watchdog says action is required to ensure staffing at a North Kerry nursing home was appropriate the meet residents needs.
The Health and Quality Authority carried out an unannounced inspection at Lystoll Lodge, Skehenerin, Listowel in August.
The facility was inspected across 23 areas of the Health Act 2007.
HIQA found it to be fully compliant in 10 categories, substantially compliant in seven, and non-compliant in six areas.
The report says residents felt safe living in the centre while one resident told inspectors “staff couldn’t be kinder.”
Inspectors found Lystoll Lodge to be non-compliant in premises; residents’ rights; records, staffing; and governance and management.
It was also found to not comply in applications by registered providers for the variation or removal of conditions of registration – whereby documents were required to provide assurance that building renovations comply with regulations.
HIQA stated while improvements were noticed from the previous inspection of the facility three weeks prior, it noted some repeat findings.
These included inadequate dining facilities available, gaps remaining in the management structure, while concerns remained around privacy curtain positioning in some bedrooms.
Inspectors stated almost half of residents (46%) were assessed as maximum or high dependency, and noted action was required to ensure the number and skill mix of staff was appropriate to meet the needs of all of its residents.
The centres management outlined a number of measures it would undertake to meet compliance.
HIQA stated the compliance plan response for governance and management, and premises, did not adequately assure the chief inspector that the actions would result in compliance with these regulations.
