Heavy swells delayed major wreck recovery operation in Dingle harbour

Heavy swells this morning have delayed a major salvage and wreck removal operation at the mouth of Dingle Harbour.

The French fishing trawler, Fastnet, ran aground at Binn Bán beach, west of Dingle Lighthouse on 14th December (2025).

The owner of the vessel has now, through its insurance provider, hired Castletownbare based contractor Atlantic Towage and Marine.

The 28-metre and 345 tonne French trawler, Fastnet, was driven aground by strong winds following engine failure last December.

This resulted in the dramatic rescue of the 14 people onboard, with Rescue helicopter 115 winching them to safety.

Atlantic Towage and Marine has been making preparations in Dingle this week to moor a barge alongside the stricken vessel.

From there, salvage and wreck removal experts will board the boat and use high-tech equipment to disassemble the trawler.

Extensive plans for the project, which will take around eight weeks in good weather, were approved in advance by the Department of the Marine and the Coast Guard.

Weather and tidal conditions in Dingle Harbour this morning prevented the barge from being put in place.

The situation continues to be assessed, and work will resume when conditions allow.
