Gardaí are investigating the cause of a major wildfire at Killarney National Park.

The blaze on Tuesday night, which lasted several hours, destroyed an estimated 20-22 hectares of the park.

Units from the Kerry Fire Service, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, and helicopters battled the flames, which were extinguished at 12.15am Wednesday.

He stated a memo will go before cabinet for National Park legislation, which would allow Parks draft bye-laws.

Meanwhile, Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr John O'Donoghue urged for a ban on disposable BBQs during Status Orange wildfire warnings.

Minister of State O’Sullivan believes there is great merit in the call.
