Four young boys had to be rescued from a strong riptide off St Finian's Bay yesterday afternoon.
Kevin O'Connor of Valentia Island Sea Sports and Garret Guirey from Renard were surfing in the bay between Portmagee and Ballinskelligs when they saw that the children were in difficulty.
The boys were aged between eight and twelve approximately, and were struggling to swim against the rip current.
Mr O'Connor described how they got the children back to the beach one-by-one:
They suggested that more signage is needed to encourage people to go to nearby beaches, which do not experience rip currents, instead.
Garret Guirey says locals and visitors need to be educated on their dangers:
They recommended this video from the Armada Hotel at Spanish Point, which shows how to manage when caught in a rip current.
