The first families have been moved out of a direct provision centre in Kerry.

The Department of Justice has confirmed that the first transfers have taken place from the Skellig Star Accommodation Centre in Cahersiveen.

Last week, Minister for Justice and Equality Helen McEntee spoke in the Dáil about the Cahersiveen direct provision centre.

She said the first families will be moved by the end of this week and the remainder of the residents will be moved as soon as places are found.

Minister McEntee said she received a commitment this’ll happen no later than the end of the year.

Minister for Integration, Deputy Roderic O'Gorman, will be tasked to follow through on this commitment.

The Department of Justice has now said the first families were transferred from the Skellig Star Accommodation Centre earlier this week, as committed to, and further transfers will take place over the coming weeks.

It adds that testing of any person, including residents in direct provision, is a matter for the HSE.
