Murder-suicides are not rare in Ireland, and need to be considered extreme domestic violence.
That’s according to Dr Audrey Galvin, a journalism lecturer at the University of Limerick (UL).
Originally from Finuge, Dr Galvin focused her PhD on how the media shapes public opinion in cases of familicide and murder-suicide.
She says last week’s killing of a mother and her two children in Fermanagh is the 30th such case on the island of Ireland since records began in 2007.
Dr Galvin says that while the motive is rarely fully understood, both the media and society must rethink how masculinity is portrayed:
