An expert on international affairs says the Taoiseach should meet President Donald Trump at the White House on St Patrick’s Day next week.
There had been calls for Micheál Martin to forego the traditional visit to the White House to meet the US President, over US military action in Iran.
Brigid Laffan from Cahersiveen is emeritus professor at the Robert Schuman Centre, at the European University Institute in Florence.
She says it’s clear the war by US and Israel on Iran breaches international law, but it’s important to acknowledge the tyranny of the Iranian regime, and the proxies like Hezbollah and Hamas it has funded to breach international law in the past.
Professor Laffan says Micheál Martin should raise issues like Gaza and Iran with President Trump in private, but not damaging Irish interests is his number one priority.
