The Mercosur trade deal will be referred to the European Court of Justice (ECJ).
The majority of MEPs voted for the move in the European Parliament today.
This is the moment the EU-Mercosur trade deal was referred to the European Court of Justice for review:
MEPs are concerned that the splitting of the deal into two parts, isn't compatable with an already existing EU framework.
Essentially, the deal is split into groups called EMPA and ITA.
The ITA element covers trade and reduced taxes on things like cars and beef.
While the EMPA part looks after cooperation on policy, and the sharing of data across areas like climate and research.
Speaking before the vote, Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan, said it was important the matter was looked at:
Farmers say the deal opens Ireland and other countries open to beef treated with hormones.
But IBEC's Fergal O'Brien says it also presents huge opportunities for the economy:
Since the vote, the decision has been welcomed by MEPs like Billy Kelleher and the IFA.
Fine Gael's Sean Kelly warned against the vote passing, saying it could undermine EU institutions.
Despite that though, the deal could be delayed now for at least 2 years.
