Eight Kerry river barrier projects are to receive part of €13.8 million in funding.
The Barrier Mitigation Programme will be led by Inland Fisheries Ireland, and will address man-made barriers such as weirs and culverts.
The funding has been welcomed by Minister of State Michael Healy Rae, Deputy Danny Healy Rae, Deputy Michael Cahill, and Minister Norma Foley.
The Barrier Mitigation Programme’s aim is to restore free-flowing rivers and improve fish migration, local biodiversity, and overall river health.
The eight Kerry river barrier projects are at Listowel Racecourse Bridge, Galey Bridge Apron, Listowel Weir, Hogs Head Golf Club Bridge, Glanteenassig Culvert, Shannowen Killmurry, Croughmore West and Bunglasha Culvert.
In total, the funding will support 103 river barrier mitigation projects nationwide.
The projects were selected following a funding call earlier this year and will now progress through design, assessment and construction phases over the next one to five years, depending on the complexity of works required.
