€9,500 valued chair made with Valentia slate to go on display at modern art fair

A 210 kg chair made from Valentia slate will go on exhibition at a modern contemporary art fair in Dublin.

Award-winning furniture designer, Edwyn James Hickey created the piece, after visiting the South Kerry quarry.

Valentia slate is extracted underground on Valentia Island, and has been used since at least 1816.

It has been used in many landmark buildings around the globe, including in the House of Commons in the UK, and the Paris Opera House.

The slate is used as the two side pieces of the €9,500 valued chair.

Designed by award-winning Limerick architect and furniture designer, Edwyn James Hickey, the Valentia Slate chair is being exhibited by Dublin’s Sol Gallery at Art Evolve, a unique contemporary art fair running at the RDS from April 4–6.
