A new hangout space for teenagers is to be developed in Killarney, with funding announced today.
€50,000 has been announced for Kerry County Council to develop the Killarney Teen Hangout space on the Park Road.
The Department of Children says it recognises that more play and recreation amenities, such as social hang out spaces and multi-use game areas, are required for teenagers due to their population increase and lack of facilities.
The project includes an outdoor ‘hangout’ shelter, sheltered seating area, integrated Bluetooth speakers, outdoor exercise units, boxup outdoor locker and bike racks. The shelter will be prefabricated and brought onto the site.
The features and equipment included in the final design will ensure that teenagers with additional needs will be able to access it, this will include wheelchair accessibility
Young people were consulted in the proposal for the Killarney Teen Hangout, and in evaluating which projects were to be funded.
The funding was announced by Kerry Fianna Fáil TD and Minister for Children Norma Foley.
The announcement has been welcomed by Fine Gael Senator Mike Kennelly.
