Bus Éireann has allocated a double decker coach to the 279 Killarney to Tralee service via Killorglin, Milltown and Castlemaine.
It followed calls from Kerry county councillor Tommy Griffin for the bus operator to provide additional capacity on the route, to cater for an increase in demand since schools and colleges reopened.
On Wednesday (10/09/2025), the daily 279 service, which departs Killarney at half past seven in the morning (7:30am), and the 279A from Cahersiveen to Tralee were both full by the time they reached Castlemaine.
This resulted in three students at Castlemaine not being allowed to board; they were subsequently late for college.
Bus Éireann is contracted by the National Transport Authority (NTA), to operate both route 279 and 279A as Public Service Obligation (PSO) routes.
A double decker coach will now run on the 279 Killarney to Tralee service to increase capacity.
Bus Éireann has apologised for any inconvenience caused.
