The annual Daniel O’Connell Summer School has begun today in Cahersiveen.
The school highlights the legacy of Daniel O’Connell, nationally and internationally, explores issues of importance to O’Connell, and celebrates the rich traditions and folklore of O’Connell’s native South Kerry.
The school was opened this morning at the Ring of Kerry Hotel by Dr Linda Doyle, Provost of Trinity College, Dublin, before a discussion chaired by former Kerry TD and Minister John O’Donoghue.
The Daniel O’Connell Awards was awarded to Cahersiveen man and CNN reporter Donie O’Sullivan in a presentation moderated by Radio Kerry’s Joe McGill.
Later today, there will be a discussion on “Daniel O’Connell in his Private Worlds”, and an address by GAA President Jarlath Burns at Con Keating Memorial Park.
The summer school continues tomorrow with a programme of events in Derrynane House, where O’Connell grew up, including the annual lecture, delivered this year by Taoiseach Micheál Martin.
