A Castleisland councillor says action must be taken to stop fast food vans taking over the towns main street during the annual fair day.
Charlie Farrelly was speaking at the recent Castleisland-Corca Dhuibhne MD meeting when he raised the matter.
The annual Castleisland Horse Fair Day takes place every November 1st and is one of the oldest fairs in the country.
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Charlie Farrelly said we can’t see a repeat of some of the occurrences from this year's fair day.
He stated tonnes upon tonnes of rubbish was left thrown around mart lane, with people expecting council workers to clean it.
Cllr Farrelly says this stems from another issue, whereby seven chip vans pulled in on Castleisland's main street and set up for the day.
The independent councillor stated this is simply not acceptable, and very unfair on the local restaurants who work as normal, and then these fast-food trucks pull up outside their premises.
Cllr Farrelly said if a coffee van pulled in at the Kerry Scenic Platform viewpoint on the way into the town, Kerry County Council would shut it down in minutes; but not an eyelid is batted at these chip vans.
He added it’s not fair on the local businesses who pay rent and rates year round; adding a meeting with Gardaí and local stakeholders needs to take place to prevent this from happening in the future.
