Tralee is missing a trick by not offering a serviced motor home area in the public car park in Blennerville.
That’s according to Sinn Féin councillor Deirdre Ferris, who raised the issue at the recent Tralee Municipal District meeting.
Kerry County Council said it is developing a strategy for the provision of campervan facilities.
Cllr Ferris requested that the council install motor home services and amenities in the public car park in Blennerville.
Kerry County Council responded that its Tourism Strategy 2025-2028, which is currently being developed, will outline how the council aims to grow tourism infrastructure.
As part of this, it says it’s developing a strategy to guide the development of well-planned, sustainable campervan facilities.
These will be near towns, villages, and other centres that have the necessary infrastructure and services to support them.
The council said after this strategy is completed, it will assess and consider proposals for the development of campervan facilities in Blennerville and other suitable locations.
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Ferris said the car park is already full of motorhomes during the summer, so this is clearly the ideal location for a serviced site for them.
The Sinn Féin councillor added Tralee should have something available to offer people with motorhomes, and it’s missing a trick without it.
Mayor of Tralee, Labour councillor Terry O’Brien, said he agrees fully but the issue is that there are currently no guidelines for this kind of infrastructure.
He said there’s a lot of work to do on drafting these guidelines, but the full council will be presented with a document on it as quickly as possible.
