Councillor says delays to grants for maintaining graveyards should not happen again

A north Kerry councillor has called for delays to grants for the maintenance of graveyards not to happen again.

Councillor Jimmy Moloney claimed that this year’s grants only began to be paid out in the week before the Listowel Municipal District (MD) November meeting.

He said this was unsatisfactory, adding that the community groups responsible for the maintenance of burial grounds do most of their work in the summer, when the weather is fine.

Cllr Moloney appealed to management to make sure that next year’s grants are paid out in April and May, when groups maintaining graveyards need to buy their machinery and equipment.
