An independent councillor has described the lack of progress to the bus stop in Farranfore as a scandal of the highest order.
Cllr Jackie Healy-Rae asked for an update on the upgrades at the recent meeting of Castleisland-Corca Dhuibhne Municipal District.
Speaking at the meeting Cllr Jackie Healy-Rae said it’s embarrassing that over a year has passed and no signs in the village have been replaced.
He outlined that a million euro has been allocated in two separate allocations to Kerry County Council from the NTA to upgrade bus stops in the county.
Cllr Healy-Rae asked the chamber if someone could point out where in Farranfore the bus stop from the Killarney direction is.
He described the sign as a brown rusty-nail of a thing, that tourists wouldn’t have a hope of finding; adding it’s a sad reflection of the local authority that this sign still hasn’t been replaced.
Cllr Healy-Rae also aired his frustration at Irish Rail claiming they treated the md poorly by not following up on their plans for a car park in Farranfore train station.
In response the council advised that the National Transport Authority are co-ordinating the stop upgrade in Farranfore.
It expected this work would be completed by the end of last year, but the council will request a status update and advocate for further upgrades in the county.
The motion was seconded by Fianna Fáil councillor, Fionnán Fitzgerald who said the issues with the bus stop are having an effect on businesses in the area.
He urged for the signs to be replaced and requested the council to relocate the bus stop to a more suitable location so buses can pull in safely and not affect traffic and businesses.
