Kerry County Council says it’s working to ensure that all of the county is positioned to benefit from the Ryder Cup, given the scope of the event.
The Ryder Cup will take place in Adare Manor in September of next year.
The event was discussed at the recent Tralee Municipal District meeting, following a motion tabled by Fianna Fáil councillor Mikey Sheehy.
Cllr Mikey Sheehy asked that an action plan be prepared to maximise the economic and tourism opportunities for Tralee around the Ryder Cup.
He told the meeting that this was the biggest sporting event in the world, and highlighted the county’s dependence on tourism.
Cllr Sheehy acknowledged the work being done by Kerry County Council, but wanted to know specifics regarding how Tralee town would be marketed particularly to family members that wanted something other than golf.
He suggested a Ryder Cup fan-zone in Tralee town-centre, extending trading hours, as well as signage and branding positioning Tralee as a Ryder Cup hub.
Kerry County Council stated it fully recognises the significant opportunities that a global event of this scale can bring to the wider region in terms of visitor numbers, economic activity, and international exposure.
The council is actively progressing this work and is taking a coordinated, county-wide approach to planning for Kerry as a spillover destination around the Ryder Cup.
The council is examining how the county can contribute to, and benefit from, the Ryder Cup visitor flow, and it will continue to engage with local stakeholders and elected members as this work progresses.
