Kerry County Council is reminding people to be safe on the county's roads around the school run, with the new term starting.
The council says parents and guardians, as well as the general public, need to be aware of the basic rules of the road and the Safe Cross Code around school time.
The council says parents, guardians and students have a role to play in ensuring a safe route to school for everyone.
Kerry County Council’s Road Safety Officer Declan Keogh says people who are not paying attention around schools are at risk of causing an actual incident or a near-miss.
He says some parents think it’s safe to let their child out of the vehicle in a line of traffic, while others let them out of vehicles onto the middle of the road, which is highly dangerous.
Mr Keogh says parents should park the vehicle in a safe place and ensure the child exits on the footpath-side.
He says parents and guardians should also make sure their child is visible to other road users, that they look for a safe place to cross, and use controlled crossings properly.
He’s also reminding motorists to obey the direction of school wardens at the 15 crossings in Kerry, who are empowered by law to stop traffic.
The council’s Road Safety Officer Declan Keogh will visit primary and secondary schools in the county during the school term to deliver road safety education programmes to students.
