The council is to seek a meeting with Uisce Éireann to discuss the lack of water in Kenmare and the impact it’s having on developments in the area.
The issue was raised at the recent Kenmare MD meeting by Independent councillor Dan McCarthy.
In September, it emerged that developers of multi-unit housing projects in Kenmare must now also supply the water.
MD councillors were told all applicants for such developments will need to provide an alternative water supply to the homes until a new public scheme becomes available in the future.
The utility said a new public water source, as well as a new water treatment plant is needed to provide water to additional developments in the Kenmare area, due to limits on the area’s existing supply.
At the recent MD meeting, Cllr Dan McCarthy asked how many planning permissions have been refused in Kenmare due to the infrastructure problem due to the lack of water.
He stated we have a serious housing crisis, there are sites ready to go and builders are also ready.
The council said no proposed developments have been refused planning permission in Kenmare town due to a lack of water supply.
However, it stated there are a number of applications for multiple residential developments in the town where further information has been sought and water supply is one of the factors that the planning authority is seeking to have addressed.
Cllr Johnny Healy-Rae seconded the motion and asked for a meeting to be arranged with Uisce Éireann to discuss the issue, which the council said it would work to arrange.
