There is currently no funding allocated to develop a bypass in Killorglin.
Fianna Fáil councillor Tommy Cahill sought an update on plans to address traffic congestion in the town at the recent Kenmare Municipal District meeting.
He asked Kerry County Council if a bypass was being seriously considered for the town.
Cllr Tommy Cahill asked the council to provide a comprehensive report outlining their plans to address the significant daily traffic delays in Killorglin town, as locals await the development of a bypass.
Cllr Cahill, who is Cathaoirleach of the MD, told the meeting the issue of traffic is quite significant in the town and said people are missing things like medical appointments as a result.
When he asked whether a bypass was seriously being considered for the town, the council told him that there is no current funding allocation and that the project was not on the books for Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
The council says discussions involving such a project have taken place between it and TII over the years, and Kerry County Council confirmed that it will raise the issue again with TII at their next meeting.
The council also told the meeting that TII funding has been very constrained over the last couple of years, but there are indications it may improve over the next number of years.
It also says that minor proposals to assist traffic flow in Killorglin town are being considered as part of public realm improvements that will be proposed under the Killorglin RRDF scheme.
It adds the provision of a bypass, that would enable the dispersal of large volumes of traffic away from the town centre, is the only intervention that will have a significant impact on traffic congestion at peak times.
